K'vod HaTorah Fundraiser

Our community cares deeply for Torah values, and seeing our holy Torah accidently fall from the Ark to the Bimah during services this morning shocked us all. Several unfortunate factors caused the Torah to fall, in particular its mismatching "atzei chaim" (handles) and "klaf" (scroll).

One well-known custom after the fall of a Torah scroll is a forty-day fast divided among the congregation. However, since the Torah did not drop on the floor itself but on a raised platform that is more than ten "tefachim" high (about thirty inches), it only constitutes a "partial fall of the Torah" and there is no requirement to fast.

Nevertheless, at times like these, we should make a special effort to show how deeply we care for "K'vod HaTorah" (the Honor of the Torah). Giving tzedakah (charity) is another common custom in this situation. Therefore, please, join me and other members of the CTI family in a special fundraiser in honor of our holy Torahs. The funds raised will be used for some much needed improvements to our Torahs, including the purchase of new Torah handles, as well as new, white covers for the Torahs and a white "parochet" (curtain) for the High Holidays.

The name of our congregation means, the "Splendor of the Israel." Let us contribute towards that splendor in ways that will enhance and make more meaningful our spiritual and religious experiences.
